For reptile owners: What behaviour is to be expected from a pet snake?

I am considering buying a small pet snake when I move into my place soon and thought it would be wise to ask those experienced in handling reptiles what type of behaviour is to be expected from a snake. Some people that I asked before gave various personalities of them ranging from that they are all aggressive, evil, dangerous, boring etc. But I would like to know for sure what to expect. Also, what is the the best kind of small snake for beginners? Thanks.

  1. First of all, Ball Pythons are the best beginner snakes, but they aren't really that small. If you don't care about size, I would definitely recommend Ball Pythons, they are extremely docile, but are still extremely interesting snakes, they need about a 30-40 gallon tank for an adult. If size is an issue, then i would recommend a Californian King Snake, they are almost as docile as Ball Pythons, but much smaller.
  2. Most snakes just sit in a hide box until its feeding time. A good snake would be a boa
  3. I would recommend the kingsnake because they are very calm definetly not the ratsnake because its mostly aggresive and doesen't like being held.
  4. Look into a Rosy Boa.They are only one of 2 Boas native to North America. They usually only get about 2-3 ft in length and have good long lifespans. There are a lot of varieties to choose from and are one of the best looking snakes. They are not hard to care for and can be kept in a 10 -15 gal tank. I do recommend that you do a lot of research about any snake you choose to get. Also you may want to look for a Yahoo group that has owners of what you choose so you may get help when you need it. Good Luck in your search. Snakemo
